Recently (October-2006) Dr.Szewczyk has introduced laparoscopic collectomy at Southern Tennessee Medical Center. This is a modern way of treatment to colon disease.

Minimally invasive colon surgery is a safe and effective alternative to open surgery. It achieves the same results as traditional surgery, but patients recover faster and experience less pain.

Traditional colon surgery requires 8-12 inches long incision, at least 5-7 days hospitalization and long painful postoperative recovery. With laparoscopy patients experience much less pain since the incision is only 2-3 inches long and they return home within 3-5 days. Also, patients use less narcotics, have fewer wound complications and return quicker to normal activities.

However, these procedures are technically very challenging and only most experienced and proficient laparoscopic surgeons are capable of offering this way of treatment to their patients.
